Good hints above but there are a few things I would add. I wash almost everything in cold to save energy and because I can kill most bacteria and germs with borax, bleach, or vinegar. Try to wash items that are like in weight so that you avoid pilling and undue wear on your garments. Like don't wash heavy jeans with cotton dress shirts because the jeans will literally beat up the cotton fiber and you will get less wear over time.

Learn the tag codes on clothing. If a lable says wash separately, this is a warning sign. Usually it is because the dyes are not set and will bleed on to other clothing. Vinegar (and salt for that matter) is great for setting the dyes on garments to keep them from transferring onto other garments. Vinegar is also better to use in the rinse water for towels because it doesn't affect their absobancy like fabric softener does and it will still leave them soft and fluffly.

Watch zippers, metal buttons and embellishments on garments. Turn garments inside out and button and zip them before laundering. These tend to nick the inside drum of the washer and drier and will cause rust spots that will appear mysteriously on other garments.

Particularly in colder weather, do not let wet garments sit in the washer to avoid mold and mildew from forming on garments.

Always have a pre-spotter handy that will treat the biggest majority of the types of stains you tend to have. In our house, someone is famous for little grease spots dripped on the front of t-shirts and polos from whatever he consumed that day. I like Zout because it removes most of the types of stains we generate.

Always check cuffs and collars for pre-spotting before laundering as these tend to be areas that sweat and collect dirt particularly if you live in a smoggy environment.

If you have been working in the yard or have a particularly dirty or smelly load of laundry, borax added (about 2/3 cup for a full load) really boosts the power of detergents and removes odors.

Don't bleach whites every time you launder them particularly if they are 100% cotton as it will cause yellowing of the fiber over time. Add it every other time and about every 3 times add a couple of drops of Mrs Stewarts bluing for extra whitening. This will keep your whites eye popingly clean.

Only launder full loads because a full load takes just as much energy as a small one. But, do not crowd clothing or pack the washer drum too full so that the clothes do not get adequate circulation in the water and detergent. Always add the detergent and any other additives to the water and not directly on the garments.I need to finally learn how to wash laundry?
separate whites from colors.

Hot for whites

Cold or warm for colors.

Don't put too much in at one time.
All I have to add is seperate lint givers from lint receivers.
Seperate loads into like colors, wash whites in warm or hot water, colors in cold. Check package directions for amount of cleaning or softner product. Do not add too much. Bleach can be added to white load only.
Yeah, what she said. Also make sure you empty the lint trap after every drying cycle.
